What Is a Venous Angiogram and Stent Procedure?

A venous angiogram is a specialized x-ray technique used to visualize your veins and identify any abnormalities, such as blockages or clots. Often coupled with intravascular ultrasound (IVUS), this procedure provides a detailed view of your vein’s interior to assess conditions like deep vein thrombosis (DVT) or iliac stenosis.

When a narrowing is detected, a stent—a small metal mesh tube—may be inserted to hold the vein open. This procedure is known as venous stenting and is essential for improving blood flow and relieving symptoms such as chronic swelling or pain.

Conditions Treated with Venous Stenting

  • Chronic Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT): This condition involves blood clots in your deep veins, usually in the legs, which can obstruct blood flow.
  • Post-Thrombotic Syndrome: Often a result of DVT, this syndrome can cause long-lasting pain and swelling in the affected limb.
  • May-Thurner Syndrome: Characterized by the compression of the left iliac vein by the right iliac artery, leading to significant leg pain and swelling.

What to Expect During the Procedure?

Typically performed on an outpatient basis under moderate sedation, venous stenting involves:

  • Inserting a needle into a vein, usually in the groin or behind the knee.
  • Guiding a catheter to the narrowed area using x-ray guidance.
  • Using a balloon-tipped catheter to expand the vein.
  • Placing a stent to keep the vein open.

Most patients are able to return home the same day. Post-procedure, medications such as clopidogrel (Plavix) may be prescribed to prevent blood clots.
