Valvuloplasty in Central Florida

Valvuloplasty, often referred to as balloon valvuloplasty or balloon valvotomy, is a specialized hospital procedure that repairs heart valves with narrowed openings. This condition, known as stenosis, occurs when the valve leaflets become thickened or stiff, leading to a reduced blood flow through the valve.

At Cardiac and Vascular Consultants, we prioritize your heart health with expert valvuloplasty services in Central Florida. Our team of board-certified cardiologists provides patient-centered care to better your quality of life.

What Is Valvuloplasty?

A valvuloplasty is more than just a procedure; it’s a pathway to enhanced heart function. By improving blood flow through a narrowed valve, it can significantly alleviate symptoms of valve stenosis. Our experienced doctors will assess your condition to determine if valvuloplasty is the most suitable treatment for you.

When Is Valvuloplasty Recommended?

  • You have severe valve narrowing accompanied by symptoms.
  • Mitral valve stenosis is present, regardless of symptom presence.
  • Narrowing of the tricuspid or pulmonary valve is diagnosed.
  • Aortic valve stenosis is noted, particularly in pediatric cases.

It is important to note that in adults, the aortic valve may narrow again post-procedure. Valvuloplasty is often prioritized for those who are not surgical candidates or are awaiting valve replacement.

How Valvuloplasty Is Performed

The procedure involves inserting a thin tube (catheter) with a balloon at its tip into an artery in the arm or groin. Using X-ray guidance, the catheter is maneuvered to the affected heart valve. The balloon is inflated to widen the valve opening and separate the leaflets, then deflated and removed.

You will be consciously sedated during the procedure, and an overnight hospital stay is typically required for observation and recovery.
