Pulmonary Embolectomy

What Is Pulmonary Embolectomy?

Pulmonary embolectomy is a life-saving procedure used to remove blood clots from the pulmonary arteries when a massive or high-risk pulmonary embolism blocks blood flow from the heart to the lungs. By removing the clot, the procedure restores oxygen circulation, reduces strain on the heart, and helps prevent heart failure and other complications. At Cardiac and Vascular Consultants, both open and minimally invasive embolectomy techniques are available.

When Is Pulmonary Embolectomy Needed?

This procedure is considered when a large pulmonary embolism causes severe shortness of breath, low oxygen levels, shock, or heart strain. It is also used when anticoagulants or clot-dissolving medications cannot be given or have not been effective. Urgent intervention is often required to prevent life-threatening complications.

Procedure Overview

Surgical pulmonary embolectomy is performed through a chest incision, using a heart-lung bypass machine while the surgeon removes the clot directly. Catheter-directed embolectomy is a minimally invasive option that uses a vein-accessed catheter to suction or mechanically remove the clot, sometimes combined with a small dose of clot-dissolving medication. A multidisciplinary team determines the safest and most effective method for each patient.

Recovery and Follow-Up

After the procedure, patients are closely monitored in the ICU for heart and lung recovery. Post-care includes anticoagulation therapy, imaging follow-ups, gradual activity, and ongoing cardiovascular management. Personalized recovery plans help support long-term health and reduce future clot risk.
