What Is a Duplex Ultrasound?

A duplex ultrasound is a non-invasive test that combines two types of ultrasound technology to provide a detailed view of blood flow in your body. By using sound waves, it creates images of your blood vessels and measures the speed and direction of blood flow, offering critical insights into your vascular health.

Components of a Duplex Ultrasound

  • Traditional Ultrasound: Utilizes sound waves to create visual images of your blood vessels.
  • Doppler Ultrasound: Captures the sound waves bouncing off moving blood cells, translating them into data about the speed and direction of blood flow.

Types of Duplex Ultrasound Exams

Depending on your symptoms and medical history, different types of duplex ultrasound exams may be recommended:

  • Arterial and Venous Duplex of the Abdomen: Evaluates blood flow in the abdominal area and lower extremities.
  • Carotid Duplex Ultrasound: Assesses the carotid arteries in the neck, which supply blood to the brain.
  • Extremity Duplex Ultrasound: Focuses on the arms or legs to detect blockages or clots.
  • Renal Duplex Ultrasound: Examines the kidneys and their blood vessels for any abnormalities.

The Procedure: What to Expect

During the procedure, you will lie comfortably on an examination table. A certified ultrasound technician will apply a special gel to the area being examined to help transmit the sound waves. A transducer, or wand, is gently moved over your skin, emitting sound waves and capturing the echoes to create images of your blood vessels.

Throughout the exam, you’ll hear a “swishing” sound, which is the Doppler capturing the sound of blood flowing through your arteries and veins. You may be asked to change positions or hold your breath briefly to get the best images.

Ankle-Brachial Index (ABI)

In some cases, especially for leg assessments, your healthcare provider may perform an Ankle-Brachial Index (ABI). This involves measuring blood pressure in your arms and legs using blood pressure cuffs. The ABI helps determine the presence of peripheral artery disease (PAD).
